Great Karakoram Traverse Trek

The Great Karakoram Traverse is not a normal trek. It is a long, serious journey through the heart of the Karakoram, linking famous routes and very remote glacier systems into one continuous expedition. We start in Hushe Valley and finish in Hunza, crossing some of the wildest mountain terrain in Pakistan.

This trek takes us over Gondogoro La, through Concordia and K2 Base Camp, across the vast ice of Snow Lake, and finally over Hisper La. It is physically demanding and requires patience, experience, and respect for the mountains.

At Machulo Treks & Tours Pakistan, this trek is led by local mountain guides who know these routes from real experience. We keep the approach simple and honest: walk steadily, acclimatize properly, look after the team, and let the mountains set the pace.

Itinerary & Details

You arrive in Islamabad and transfer to the hotel. Once everyone is settled, we sit together for a short briefing, go over the plan, and check equipment.

Early flight to Skardu if weather allows. On clear days, you’ll see Nanga Parbat and long chains of Karakoram peaks. After arrival, we rest and take it easy.

This day is important. We rest, adjust to the altitude, sort permits, and make sure all gear is ready. A short walk in Skardu helps loosen the legs.

We drive by jeep through Shigar Valley to Hushe, the last village before the high mountains. This is where the real journey begins.

An easy first walking day along the river. The trail is gentle and helps the body get used to carrying a pack. Masherbrum dominates the skyline.

The trail slowly climbs through open alpine ground. We take our time, walking at a steady pace and camping below the Gondogoro Glacier.

Today is tougher, with rocky and glacial terrain. We move carefully and keep the group together as the landscape becomes more serious.

We start very early, usually before sunrise. The climb to Gondogoro La is demanding but the views from the top are unforgettable — K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum, and Laila Peak all in one sweep. After a careful descent, we reach Ali Camp.

We step onto the Baltoro Glacier and follow it to Concordia. The scale of the mountains here is hard to describe — this is one of the great places of the Karakoram.

A full rest day. Some people walk around, others just sit and absorb the surroundings. Proper rest here makes the next part of the trek safer and easier.

We walk up-glacier to K2 Base Camp and Broad Peak Base Camp. There is time to explore and take photos before returning to Concordia.

A steady glacier day. The walking is slow but straightforward, with ice formations and big peaks all around us.

We leave the glacier and climb up to Urdukas, a classic campsite with wide views back down the Baltoro.

We descend to Paiyu, where the glacier ends. This feels like a small return to normal ground after many days on ice.

The trail follows the Braldu River through narrow valleys and crossing points. A long but manageable day.

We continue downstream, gradually leaving the Baltoro region behind and moving toward the Biafo Glacier area.

The terrain becomes wilder again as we enter the Biafo Glacier system. Fewer trekkers come this way.

A challenging glacier day. Footwork and patience are important as we move deeper toward Snow Lake.

We take a rest day near Snow Lake. This is a good place to recover and prepare for the high crossing ahead.

We cross the wide, open ice of Snow Lake. The walking is long but the scenery is immense and quiet.

A steady climb toward Hisper La. We keep the pace slow and consistent.

A shorter day used to position ourselves well for the pass crossing.

Another early start. The climb to Hisper La is long but straightforward. From the top, we descend onto the Hisper Glacier and camp below.

We descend the Hisper Glacier, surrounded by remote and rarely visited terrain.

A long glacier walk as the valley slowly opens up.

The landscape continues to change as we move lower, with fewer crevasses and more rock.

Our final glacier day before reaching villages again.

We leave the ice and walk into Hisper village. Trekking ends here.

Jeep drive to Hunza Valley. Hot showers and proper beds feel well earned.

A long but scenic drive across Babusar Pass, depending on road conditions.

Final drive back to Islamabad.

Kept for weather delays or extra rest if needed.

Transfer to the airport for onward flights.
